Buy X Get X With Multiple Discount Tiers

Case background

One of our most popular use cases of the BXGX campaign type was to create a “buy one and get one”. However, what should we do if “buy 2 get 2”, “buy 2 get 3” and so on with the same products?

In this article, we will guide you through the steps to set it up. Now, let’s dive into it.

Before You Start

Before creating your campaign, make sure:
  • You know which products or collections customers need to buy.
  • You have planned your purchase tiers, reward quantities, and discount values.
  • Your Shopify theme has the app properly installed and enabled.

Step 1: Create the campaign

Go to: CampaignsCreate campaignBOGO deal

Step 2: Configure Campaign Info

Campaign Status

Enable or disable the campaign using the Campaign status toggle.

  • Active: The campaign is live and available to customers storefront-wide.
  • Inactive: The campaign is saved as a draft and won't be displayed on your storefront.

Campaign Name

Enter a campaign name for internal reference.

  • Example: T-Shirt Buy 1 Get 1 Free Campaign
  • This name is only visible within the app dashboard and will not be shown to customers.

Discount Label

Enter the text that customers will see when the discount is applied.

  • Example: BOGO Deal
  • This text will appear in the cart and during checkout when the qualifying campaign conditions are met.

Active Dates

Schedule when your Buy X Get X campaign starts and ends.

You can configure:
  • Time zone
  • Start date and Start time
  • End date (Optional, by checking the Set end date box)

Step 3: Configure Campaign Rules

Customer Buys (X)

Choose which products qualify as the trigger requirement for the offer.

You can select:
  • Specific products: Apply the buy requirement only to selected items.
  • Specific collections: Apply to all products within selected collections.
  • All collections: Apply across your entire product catalog.

How Purchases Qualify for the Offer

Choose how trigger quantities are calculated across your selections:

  • Combine quantities across selected items: The quantities of all eligible products in the cart are added together to unlock the reward tier.
  • Require quantity from the same item: The required trigger quantity must come entirely from a single, individual line-item variant.

Customer Gets

Choose what product the customer receives and under what conditions:

  • Same product: Select this option so the reward is an additional unit of the exact same product variant being purchased.

  • Press the Select products button to add the gift product to the campaign.

Configure Buy X Get X Tiers

For each tier (e.g., Tier 1), configure the exact rules:

  • Buy quantity: Minimum quantity of X items the customer must buy.
  • Get quantity: The quantity of additional X items rewarded to the customer.
  • Reward type: Choose between Percentage or other markdown settings.
  • Reward value: Enter the discount value applied to the reward item (e.g., enter 100  % for a free item).
You can click + Add new tier to create progressive incentive levels (e.g., Tier 1: Buy 1 Get 1, Tier 2: Buy 2 Get 2).
Check Apply multiple times based on quantity if you want the app to automatically multiply the gift count based on growing cart sizes (e.g., Buy 1 get 1, Buy 2 get 2).

Gift Limit

Toggle the Gift limit option to control how many gifts a single customer can claim. When turned OFF, customers can claim the gift continuously as long as they meet the purchase requirements.

Advanced Settings

You can also check Exclude customer tags to actively prevent specific tagged customer groups from interacting with the deal.

Step 4: Configure Campaign Display

The Campaign Display section controls how the reward is delivered and how the promotion appears to shoppers.

How Customers Receive the Reward

Choose how eligible rewards are added to the checkout:

Auto add gift to cart

Note: Only free/100% gift can be used for auto-add to cart.

  • Popup: Displays a modal window when customers qualify for the offer.
  • Product page: Displays the gift offer details right on the product page layout.
  • Cart drawer: Shows the gift directly inside your side-cart drawer module.
You can customize the Popup heading and Popup description, as well as use the Translation button to adapt texts for multi-lingual stores.

Apply code to get gift

Customers must manually enter a specific discount code at checkout to unlock their gift item.

Show Promotion on Your Store

Toggle additional storefront visual components to maximize campaign visibility and conversion:
  • Promotion badge: Display a visual badge sticker on eligible product images.
  • Offer table on product page: Show a clear breakdown table of the Buy X Get X tiers on the product page.
  • Gift thumbnail: Show a preview image of the reward product.
  • Countdown timer: Add urgency by showing a remaining time clock for the promotion.

Step 5: Save and Test Your Campaign

Before activating your campaign, verify the following checklist:
- Campaign status is toggled to active.
- Eligible "Customer buys" products match your criteria.
- "Customer gets" is configured to Same product with your tier discounts verified.

  • The customer has added the exact required quantity of eligible items (X) to their cart.
  • Under Campaign display, the Popup option is checked and properly configured.
  • The app embed is turned on in your current active Shopify theme settings.

Customers are getting multiple gifts incorrectly

Check that:
  • Your Gift limit toggle is set up properly.
  • Review if Apply multiple times based on quantity is turned on or off depending on your promotional goals.

The Buy X Get X deal cannot be combined with another discount

Verify your Advanced settings → Combinations. Make sure you have checked the boxes for Product, Order, or Shipping discounts if you want them to be used together.
